From product design to
integrated manufacture

CAD/CAM technology enables the manufacture of a Product to be simulated on computer before production begins. This represents an important milestone in the full automation of manufacturing processes.

Nowadays all product design and manufacturing processes rely on computers. The extent to which the computer is involved depends on the degree of the company's application of computer systems, but industry is moving rapidly towards full computer integration.
CAD (Computer-Aided Design) means using computers to prepare industrial and architectural drawings. Its importance in these two sectors needs no further explanation. CAD is now well known and applied by almost all companies dealing in product design. CAD is used to design such varied products as machine parts and integrated circuits, and can create and test a product before manufacture.
With CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) the computer can supervise all stages in the manufacture of a product. CAD/CAM has already been adopted by many industries, as the two systems often go hand in hand.
CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) is a recent development which is increasingly used in industry. It is no longer a question of one simple technology, but of a complete and revolutionary manufacturing strategy to fully computerise production. The strategy includes not only CAD/CAM but everything involved in the manufacturing process, i.e. management of production and costs, quality control, database management, etc.
Computer technology has thus gone beyond the design stage to cover the entire manufacturing process as well as technical and commercial administration.

    Polysoft Consulting and the
world of CAD/CAM

Polysoft Consulting has already used TELL to design a large number of products, in areas ranging from micromechanics to architecture. The cornpany's engineers and mathematicians are constantly developing their software's modularity.

Polysoft Consulting is a Geneva-based software design company specialising in CAD/CAM. It contributes towards the evolution of this sector by developing and selling TELLTM software, and by its openended policy.
The company concentrates its research on the perfection of its software and on modularisation. TELL is very flexible and can be integrated within other systems, as well as adapted to new technological ideas within the CIM concept.
In view of the number and variety of CAD/CAM applications, the company has opted for personalised client relations. This policy was adopted to meet the constantly-changing CADICAM imperatives and clients' requirements. The company's modular systems can be modified to meet the specific requirements of each individual user.
The result is an extremely varied range of products designed, manufactured or built by engineers at Polysoft Consulting. Examples include the Federal Technical College buildings at Lausanne, Nestle plants all over the world, watch movements for Patek Philippe, Ligne Roset furniture, and many other applications. Polysoft Consulting is aware of the importance of training tomorrow's engineers and architects in CAD/CAM systems. The company's software is designed for the user to quickly become skilled in its use. The success of Polysoft software is witnessed by its use in colleges such as the Vaud School of Engineering and the Geneva technical and trade colleges, as well as by the close cooperation between the company and the universities.

    The comprehensive service
offered by Polysoft Consulting

A customer has the right to request the support of specialists to guide and advise him. Today, Polysoft Consulting devotes a large part of its activities to consulting and after-sales follow-up with customers.

The company provides its clients with consulting and after-sales service and offers them the guarantees of a company with many years' experience in computer technology.
In designing and developing its software, Polysoft's engineers work efficiently thanks to the facilities offered by the large computer manufacturers. This includes inspection and development of facilities, computer graphics and computer languages. The company also provides a complete range of services in close and constant liaison with its customers.
Polysoft Consulting provides 800 m2 of seminar space for software user training. The equipment used is identical to that ordered. After completing the course the user is immediately "operational". The system is installed on the client's premises entirely by the company, and a permanent telephone "hot-line" guarantees help if problems arise. In addition, when new versions of software appear, updated instructions are supplied, together with all necessary explanations.
Polysoft Consulting supplies its systems on a ready-to-operate basis. Clients enjoy the privilege - rarely offered by computer companies - of direct contact with the software designers, and with technically and commercially trained salesmen who are perfectly familiar with the software. Finally, an efficient after-sales department monitors all changes occurring as installations are expanded and software performance is improved.

    Plans for expansion beyong
Switzerland's frontiers

The staff of Polysoft Consulting contributes to the Company's growth across Europe. The reputation of TELL has spread well beyond Switzerland.

Polysoft Consulting started up with several types of computer applications. While working initially on projects including cigarette distribution statistics, bank management, technical applications of gas distribution and control of a hydroelectric dam, founders Serge Favre and Patrick Mégard decided to design a project for modular CAD software in order to make their work easier. It was first effectively used in 1983 on the design calculation for Städeli Lift AG (Oetwil-am-See) cable cars and the design of dials for Singer watches (La Chaux-de-Fonds). Thus, TELL became the first CAD software in Europe capable of working on medium-sized computers - an ideal tool for small and medium-sized companies.
Polysoft Consulting grew at an astonishing speed, crossing Switzerland's frontiers in 1988. It entered into a joint venture project called Regma Tell with the Regma company in France, a subsidiary of Rhône-Pouienc. Expansion is still continuing, and 1990 saw the formation of subsidiary companies in Italy and France.
Today, nearly 100 persons - more than 25 of whom are in Switzerland - are working on the development and promotion of this Swiss product that is rapidly acquiring an enviable reputation. Polysoft Consulting looks to the future with confidence, and expects TELL software to become as famous as its celebrated Swiss namesake of the Middle Ages, William Tell.

Serge Favre (left) and Patrick Mégard built their company on one and the same philosophy : to advance towards Computer-Integrated Manufacturing with TELL and thus meet their customers' growing daily needs.
Patrick Mégard is a graduate of the Geneva School of Engineering and specializes in aviation technology. After completing his studies, he was an assistant in the EIG aviation technology laboratory for four years. Among his accomplishments is the design and construction of the laboratory's wind- tunnel. From 1978 to 1980, Patrick Mégard worked in a private bank in Geneva, developing computer applications for an important management project.
Serge Favre, also an EIG graduate, is a computer specialist. While working for two years as an assistant in the EIG computer laboratory, he produced several programs for the computing center such as electronics, thermodynamics and library management. Later, he worked as senior systems engineer in the technical service group of a major technical computer manufacturer.
In 1980, after pursuing similar, parallel careers, the two friends decided to work together and set up their own company. They are still at the head of Polysoft Consulting today, proud at having exported the reputation for Swiss quality and precision into international markets.
